Meet Eric the owner of the only Butchers shop on the Cap

The Boucherie De La Garoupe is owned and run by 47 year old Eric Proietti. You will find him right in the middle of the Cap on Boulevard Francis Meilland. Eric has been the butcher here for 19 years. His customers range from locals to the Chefs from the many private villas. I popped in recently to aks him a few questions.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Cannes until I was 28 years old. Then, until now, I have lived here.

How many years have you worked as a butcher?

I have been a butcher for 28 years. All my working life.

Why did you become a butcher?

My father was a butcher so it was always part of my life. In fact I was practically born in a butchers shop. I grew up in this environment.

Why did you buy a shop on the Cap?

I bought this shop 19 years ago in 1998 because the opportunity came up.  Before that I had been working in various Carrefour supermarkets around the area covering for staff who were away, on holiday etc.  I worked in their shops in Vallauris, Grasse and Mouans Sartoux.

Is it a family business?

Yes. I work with my mother and we have an apprentice. It’s all good.

What was the shop before you took it over?

It was also a butcher but the owner retired. He had a son but the son didn’t want to continue in the business. When it came up for sale I decided to buy it.

Who are your main customers?

The locals and the various Villas here. I have the same customers all year round.

What’s your best cut of meat?

I would say for me its definitely the Lamb. I definitely recommend the Lamb.

What’s your favourite thing to eat?

My favourite thing to eat is Beef . I mostly eat meat, fish is too fiddly for me it has too many bones.

Describe your typical day.

I get up at 7am and drink a coffee. After that I take my dog for a quick walk then I open the shop at around 7.45.

I prepare the counter displa,y cut the meat and prepare my rotiserrie. After work I have a nice little beer and relax upstairs where I live. I have no stress of commuting or lack of time as everything I need is right here.
