Pan Bagnat to Bouillabaise

A famous Cap d’Antibes restaurant with beautiful views towards old Antibes, the Restaurant Bacon has been in existence since 1950. It is still owned by the Sordello family who opened the original beach snack in 1949. Initially called the Buffet de Bacon it was renowned for it’s Pan Bagnats.

The menu has gone a little more upmarket since those days having earned a Michelin star in 1979 which the restaurant held until 2017.

Specialising in seafood the restaurant is most famous for it’s Bouillabaise not to mention the exceptional home cooking and impeccable service set in an idyllic setting.

During the Cannes film festival the restaurant is busy with celebrities and people from the entertainment and film industry who dine alongside wealthy Cap d’Antibes holiday home owners.

However don’t be put off by the hidden entrance and it’s look of exclusivity. Despite appearances this is just a regular, albeit luxury, restaurant like any other. Everyone is welcome. Basically you don’t have to be rich or famous to eat here. The lunch menu starts at 55.00 euros which I think is a bargain considering the Cote d’Azur prices in general. The quality of the food is  excellent, especially the desserts, and the staff are friendly and attentive. To top it off the views are amazing.

It’s quite a large space and I am guessing that the atmosphere must be amazing on a busy night. Unfortunately it was quite quiet on the two occassions I went. However you can imagine the place bustling and full with diners enjoying a fish supper. I am not sure why generally this restaurant isn’t busier, maybe it’s the location. The entrance is quite hidden so I imagine they don’t get much passing trade. You have to know it’s there to dine here.

Despite it having everything I want from a restaurant  I didn’t venture inside for almost ten years after moving to the Cap.

To be honest I always thought it was too posh and exclusive and more importantly too expensive for me. However nothing could be further from the truth. Maybe they need to work on this image, then this lovely restaurant will be perfect :).

So if you are visiting Antibes and fancy a real treat why not book yourself a table at the Bacon and then follow it with a walk around the Cap to work off those lovely desserts!
